Sweet on Sweet Georgia Yarn

It is so great to look out the window and see green.  Not just any green but that distinct hue of greenery that is ubiquitous in the spring; that vivid, happy, living, breathing, bright, green. Sigh!
This skein of yarn from Sweet Georgia harnesses the power of green and mixes it with this punchy pink to make the springiest yarn you ever did see.  It’s called Snapdragon.

sweet georgia

This west-coast, Canadian, hand dyer seems particularly adept at preserving the essence of Spring-Time in their sunny colour-ways. We have a pretty batch of their DK weight superwash merino, which has a springy twist that is a match for the colour. A generous 234 metre skein is $24. Some are multicolour dye jobs like Snapdragon ↑

and Sitka

and Honey Fig

Some are effervescent tonal colours that can’t wait to become jumpers.  They tell me so from the shelves.

If you’re not up for knitting a full-sized sweater, try a baby size.  After all this is superwash yarn, and spring does bring a shower of baby shower invitations in its wake. I am also moved to recommend this yarn for a baby blanket project like the one we knit up in our Beginner Knitting Baby Blanket Class (Monday June 16, 6:30-9pm), or our Beginner Crochet Blanket Class (Wednesday June 11, 18, 25, 7-9pm).

New Day Time Classes!

We are so happy that Iwona is back at the Knit Cafe after her maternity sojourn.  One of the extra benefits of having her amongst us is that she will be able to put her talents to good use and take up the mantle of teacher again.  To this end we are adding on some new dates for classes.  These classes will take place in the daylight hours and hopefully allow more options to folks whose schedules do not permit evening classes.  If that is you, then make a note:

Project Class
What would you most like to knit but don’t know how to yet? In this class we will discuss how to pick a project that is right for you and your level of experience. We will talk about finding materials, checking tension, and how to read a knitting pattern. Techniques specific to each knitter’s project will be demonstrated. Seaming and finishing techniques will also be covered.  As students work through their individual projects they will have the chance to seek advice from the expert knitting instructor and also learn from fellow students. .Steeking Workshopsteeking
In times of yore, practical knitters found they could easily change a pullover into a cardigan or even add on sleeves once a body was fully completed.  They accomplished this feat by fearlessly cutting up their hand knitting and adding these adjustments. Why is this madness desirable? It allows the knitter to knit a cardigan in the round, not bothering about sleeves,  and keeping their colour work patterns strong and steady, and for an added  bonus – you never need purl.  They called this delightful maneuver “steeking”.  In this one-evening workshop you will build nerves of steel, and cut without apprehension.  After you make the cut, selvedges will be reinforced to make beautiful edges.
This is “next level” knitting-don’t miss it!

Materials: Bring to class swatch knit in fair-isle pattern in rounds with 100% wool (not superwash) worsted weight like Cascade 220. Find details on swatching here
. Bring needles used for swatch and crochet hook of same size or 1/2 smaller and at least 30g contrast colour.chunky cardi

crochet slipperThe good-old, cozy slipper is a classic crochet pattern.  Crochet’s sturdy stitches make so much sense for a durable foot warmer.  This class will have you stitching your own versions.  Students will practice their pattern reading skills on both a charted and a written pattern, and learn simple shaping and embellishment techniques.  As an extra bonus the teacher will provide instruction on how to add on a leather bottom to prevent slipping. The slippers will be custom made to fit your tootsies, so be sure to tell us your shoe size when you register.

Reading Charted Patterns
for Crocheters
If you have ever looked at a crochet pattern then you have noticed the attractive snowflake motifs that accompany many instructions.  These are not just pretty pictures. They are the hieroglyphics that tell all about the pattern. Many folks find a chart easier to decipher then a long winded written pattern, but first you have to know how to decode the lines and squiggles.  We will show you how and you will make the prettiest wee coasters while you’re at it.

Summer is here – officially speaking, as of a few days ago, and weather-wise, as of today!  It’s a hot one.
Knitting is one of my favourite outdoor activities.  Taken with you to the park or on a weekend away, it is great for relaxing and taking in the summer vibe.  For plant-fibre enthusiasts it is also a choice time to indulge.

This past week we fully restocked the Blue Sky Alpaca’s Organic Worsted Cotton in the above colours and more besides.  This is the yarn we use in the “Your First Baby Blanket Pattern” but it would also suit the Hexagon Crochet Blanket we teach in our beginner Crochet Blanket Class.

krazy for koigu

Along with the delivery of the adorable minis, came these adult size skeins of Koigu KPPPM.  This  yarn is so gorgeous I thought each needed it’s own picture!

The postman rings several times

It has been a busy few days!

The mail carrier is a near constant visitor.
Above is Perle Cotton tiny bundles of joy, hand-dyed from Valdani.  Last year I posted this project idea (and this one too) for the perle cotton and I still stand behind them as winners.  Some bright shades of embroidery floss came along for the ride,  arriving in time for our Friendship Bracelet Class in May.
Valdani Perle Cotton is $5 per ball. $2.75 per skein of Embroidery Floss.

This summer-sweater-ready-yarn from Berroco blends together the best of cotton and linen  to make a really wearable knit. Linsey yarn comes in 105 metre (114yd) skeins for $9 each.

We have two spring/summer pattern booklets Volume 10 and Volume 8 from Norah Gaughan which make good use of this yarn.

The Berroco box also held these goodies.  Vintage Chunky is now multi-coloured!  Many of you who are fans of this yarn for it’s price and washability might be compelled to try out some of the new colour-ways for your next baby gift. Vintage Chunky is $9 for 200 metres (217 yds).

What the heck? is what I imagine you might be thinking.  These cocoon shaped enigmas are actually hand-dyed skeins of yarn from Uruguay.  10 skeins come all bundled together like so.  Later, I will detach them and coil them individually and cram them into the shelves.  Three new colour options for the folks who are taking the First Sweater Class that starts April 30th.

If those nearly neutrals don’t grab ya there’s more!   Manos del Uruguay’s Bluejay, Potpourri and Mermaid are colours that might hit the spot.  There are only 2 remaining vacancies left in the First Sweater Class.  Call us for more info or to register. 416 533 5648.

…and that’s not all the postman brought us, but it is all for now.
Till next time,
Craftily yours
Kristin

They are the hieroglyphics that tell all about the pattern. Many folks find a chart easier to decipher then a long winded written pattern, but first you have to know how to decode the lines and squiggles.  We will show you how and you will make the prettiest wee coasters while you’re at it.
