.Steeking Workshopsteeking
In times of yore, practical knitters found they could easily change a pullover into a cardigan or even add on sleeves once a body was fully completed.  They accomplished this feat by fearlessly cutting up their hand knitting and adding these adjustments. Why is this madness desirable? It allows the knitter to knit a cardigan in the round, not bothering about sleeves,  and keeping their colour work patterns strong and steady, and for an added  bonus – you never need purl.  They called this delightful maneuver “steeking”.  In this one-evening workshop you will build nerves of steel, and cut without apprehension.  After you make the cut, selvedges will be reinforced to make beautiful edges.
This is “next level” knitting-don’t miss it!

Materials: Bring to class swatch knit in fair-isle pattern in rounds with 100% wool (not superwash) worsted weight like Cascade 220. Find details on swatching here
. Bring needles used for swatch and crochet hook of same size or 1/2 smaller and at least 30g contrast colour.chunky cardi

Reading Charted Patterns
for Crocheters
If you have ever looked at a crochet pattern then you have noticed the attractive snowflake motifs that accompany many instructions.  These are not just pretty pictures. They are the hieroglyphics that tell all about the pattern. Many folks find a chart easier to decipher then a long winded written pattern, but first you have to know how to decode the lines and squiggles.  We will show you how and you will make the prettiest wee coasters while you’re at it.

Graduates will then be able to take on a variety of knitting projects with confidence.  Learn the fundamentals: how to begin and end your projects, how to make knit and purl stitches and use them together to create different textural patterns, how to read knitting patterns, and knit in the round to create tubular knitting projects. Expect to finish at least one scarf and a hat or arm warmer.

Sock Class
Socks!  You can’t have too many of them, and they make appreciated gifts too.  As a knitter, there is much to learn from socks.  The sock pattern tends towards advanced decoding, and the sock heel a tricky bit of business to navigate.  Once learned though, a sock is a satisfying and very portable project. Sock makers will learn the skills of picking up stitches and shaping the instep and the toe. Once one sock is made a sockaholic is in the making.

i’m hooked

On Thursday May 19th the Knit Cafe will be offering a Rug Hooking Class!! The image above shows off a cute peacock with mohair plumage made by the talented Maurie Todd who teaches the class.
Easy to do, rug hooking is great for getting rid of all the scrappy bits and pieces that seem to fill up ones drawers, or baskets or for some of you (yikes!) closets. I love the idea of making your own rug that squishes under your feet, but there is more to rug hooking then rugs.  Tea cozies, trivets,  wall hangings, coasters, picture frames, are other possible applications.

My fantasy rug is this one.  A Boucherouite Rug made in Morocco, a good inspiration for a rug of my own. The Rug Hooking Class  is on May 19th (the class date has been changed and this is the up to date info) from 6:30-9pm.  It costs $30 with a materials fee of $10.50 covering hook, hoop and fabric backing.  To register for the class call us 416 533 5648
Happy hooking!
