A great time to make a Crocheted Blanket!

We have an awesome selection of worsted weight yarn in the shop right now. Just look at all those colours! All of these lovelies are machine washable too which make them a perfect choice for a hand knitted or crocheted blanket. Berroco Vintage and Cascade 220 Superwash have a price-tag that won’t break the bank so let the mixing and matching begin. Whether you crave a heathered, Highland colour scheme or a bright and bold statement piece or even an oh so tastefully neutral colour story we got you covered.

Don’t know how to crochet a blanket. We got you covered there too. Our Crochet Blanket Class for Absolute Beginners is coming up. Even if you have never crocheted before you can join this class and learn basic stitches while you work on your blanket project. If you do know some crochet and have never made a blanket you are welcome in this class too. Here are the deets ↓

Classes in the Knit Cafe Garden

Two of our Knit Cafe Classes have headed to the out of doors to enjoy the lovely weather we’ve been having over the last week.

natural dye

No need to worry about messes and drips when you bring the dye pots outside. We had a great Natural Dying Class last weekend with three dye pots on the go.

We got some magnificent results too. Just look at this yummy cochineal dye bath.

We also dyed with Logwood (the purple) and marigold (the yellow).  Superwash merino really sucked up the dye and came out the deepest in tone but we had great variation with other fibres too.

Our class today also thought they would like to be out in the sunshine. I sure am glad we have such a lovely place to sit. It was so nice to see a group of crocheters happily stitching away on their crochet market bags in our sunny backyard retreat.

This week – don’t miss out on the Chevron Crochet Blanket Class, where students will learn how to Zig and how to Zag – crochet style!

Now’s the time to start your Crochet Blanket!

crochet blanket

Monday June 22th and 29th is our Crochet Blanket Class Extraordinaire!

Stitchers with just basic crochet skills are most welcome to join this class and make their version of this terrific blanket.
I have very fond memories of making a baby blanket sized version for one of my pals and her new son. It was a very enjoyable endeavor; hemming and hawing and eventually choosing and collecting the yarn colours for the blanket and then building the blanket a bit at a time, watching it grow till it all came together into one charmer of a blanket.

In this class you will learn:

• How to follow a written crochet pattern
• How to crochet in circles
• How to change colours and hide your yarn tails
• How to join crochet pieces together without seaming

You can see all the class details and register too by clicking HERE
or you can register by calling 416 533 5648.

Join the Crochet Blanket Class and meet Lloyd

Meet Lloyd.
He loves blankets of all sorts but he prefers hand knit and crocheted ones.

Lloyd is the latest addition to my household. As you can see, he is a sweet little black kitten. Along with blankets Lloyd’s other interests include
stealing yarn
chasing and retrieving crinkle balls
chewing and sleeping in cardboard boxes
tormenting pigeons
and running as fast as he can around the house for no apparent reason.

He also doesn’t seem to mind looking cute for photos to showcase the sample for our upcoming Absolute Beginner Crochet Blanket Class. Thanks Lloyd!

The Buzz on Halloween

DSCN0004Happy Halloween Everyone!

Look at the adorable hat Iwona made for Charlie’s first Halloween costume. There is a wonderful striped romper that goes with it too.  That’s what you get when you have a crafty Mom!
Sorry – there is no pattern for this hat.  It was improvised!
Crochet is a great medium for improvisation, since one stitch is added at a time and you can see your project grow and develop as you build – kinda like lego!

If you are not yet a crocheter – why not join our upcoming crochet blanket class?

crochet blanket hexagonsI love this blanket pattern! It is so fun to make and there are so many ways of making it unique by choosing different colour combinations.

It is also a terrific way to learn how to crochet in circles which is the first step to improvising your own bumble bee hat!

Sweet on Sweet Georgia Yarn

It is so great to look out the window and see green.  Not just any green but that distinct hue of greenery that is ubiquitous in the spring; that vivid, happy, living, breathing, bright, green. Sigh!
This skein of yarn from Sweet Georgia harnesses the power of green and mixes it with this punchy pink to make the springiest yarn you ever did see.  It’s called Snapdragon.

sweet georgia

This west-coast, Canadian, hand dyer seems particularly adept at preserving the essence of Spring-Time in their sunny colour-ways. We have a pretty batch of their DK weight superwash merino, which has a springy twist that is a match for the colour. A generous 234 metre skein is $24. Some are multicolour dye jobs like Snapdragon ↑

and Sitka

and Honey Fig

Some are effervescent tonal colours that can’t wait to become jumpers.  They tell me so from the shelves.

If you’re not up for knitting a full-sized sweater, try a baby size.  After all this is superwash yarn, and spring does bring a shower of baby shower invitations in its wake. I am also moved to recommend this yarn for a baby blanket project like the one we knit up in our Beginner Knitting Baby Blanket Class (Monday June 16, 6:30-9pm), or our Beginner Crochet Blanket Class (Wednesday June 11, 18, 25, 7-9pm).
