A great time to make a Crocheted Blanket!

We have an awesome selection of worsted weight yarn in the shop right now. Just look at all those colours! All of these lovelies are machine washable too which make them a perfect choice for a hand knitted or crocheted blanket. Berroco Vintage and Cascade 220 Superwash have a price-tag that won’t break the bank so let the mixing and matching begin. Whether you crave a heathered, Highland colour scheme or a bright and bold statement piece or even an oh so tastefully neutral colour story we got you covered.

Don’t know how to crochet a blanket. We got you covered there too. Our Crochet Blanket Class for Absolute Beginners is coming up. Even if you have never crocheted before you can join this class and learn basic stitches while you work on your blanket project. If you do know some crochet and have never made a blanket you are welcome in this class too. Here are the deets ↓

Making Robots from Spare Parts

robot

With our “Crochet A Robot Class” coming up next week, we were inspired to craft up a bunch of examples.
The nice thing about making toys is that you can bust your stash. A little bit of this added to a little bit of that makes a toy with a lot of character.  Most of our current robot collection was crafted by doubling up yarns to add  a pixel-like texture and lots of colour.

Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto

robotsIf you were to walk by the Knit Café today – this is what you’d see.  We’ve had quite a few gawkers since we redecorated the window, which leads me to believe that this display’s denizens are real lookers!

Iwona and I have been busy stitching up these robot stuffies! They were pretty satisfying to make and I feel like I expanded my repertoire of crochet skills in the process. If you would like to join in the robot-making-fun we are teaching a class.

love robotWhen choosing the critter to feature in our Amigurumi Class, we were inspired by our work dressing up this guy →
the Lovebot outside Scooter Girl on Roncesvalles Ave.
This knit-bomb, assembled in June 2014, has since been put out of commission, leaving room for more woolly robots to take up the slack. Come and help us make some in May, or if you are an expert crocheter you can find the pattern by Stacey Trock HERE

A Red Carpet Premiere – A New Class

Our friend and Knit Cafe collaborator Andrea Dorfman has finished a new feature film. It is called Heartbeat and it will be opening at the Tiff Lightbox on November 21rst.  You should go!
I had the opportunity to see the film during the Toronto International Film Festival. It is a wonderful and charming film that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy – much like a pair of hand-made crocheted slippers like these ones do ⇓

Heartbeat Slipper

Heartbeat includes an inspired wardrobe choice in the form of some chunky, ruby-red slippers.  They make quite an impression! We’re pretty certain after watching the film you might want to make a pair of your own. So we are offering a class to teach you how!

hearbeat slipper

Even if you have never crocheted before you can take this class and learn to make these slippers.  It is an Absolute Beginner Class, and a great way to learn basic crochet skills.

Burly is Back!

The fattest yarn in the shop is Burly Spun by Brown Sheep.  It’s 100% wool and knits 2-2.5 stitches per inch.  Get out your broomstick needles, 15mm, 20mm, even 25mm is ok.  You will have your project done in no time.
Come by The Knit Cafe and we can pull out sample after knit sample made from this yarn.  Some of it is knit extra tight like the Chunky Cardi which is knit with a 10mm needle.  Our Martin Scarf pattern is knit with a 15mm needle and our Mondo Neck Cozy pattern uses a 20mm. Apparently we can’t stop knitting with this wool and who can blame us – it knits-up so darn fast!

We have a wonderful autumnal selection of colours now.   Above is Grey Heather, Jack Plum, Spring Bluebell, and Charcoal Heather.
