Project Class
What would you most like to knit but don’t know how to yet? In this class we will discuss how to pick a project that is right for you and your level of experience. We will talk about finding materials, checking tension, and how to read a knitting pattern. Techniques specific to each knitter’s project will be demonstrated. Seaming and finishing techniques will also be covered.  As students work through their individual projects they will have the chance to seek advice from the expert knitting instructor and also learn from fellow students. .Steeking Workshopsteeking
In times of yore, practical knitters found they could easily change a pullover into a cardigan or even add on sleeves once a body was fully completed.  They accomplished this feat by fearlessly cutting up their hand knitting and adding these adjustments. Why is this madness desirable? It allows the knitter to knit a cardigan in the round, not bothering about sleeves,  and keeping their colour work patterns strong and steady, and for an added  bonus – you never need purl.  They called this delightful maneuver “steeking”.  In this one-evening workshop you will build nerves of steel, and cut without apprehension.  After you make the cut, selvedges will be reinforced to make beautiful edges.
This is “next level” knitting-don’t miss it!

Materials: Bring to class swatch knit in fair-isle pattern in rounds with 100% wool (not superwash) worsted weight like Cascade 220. Find details on swatching here
. Bring needles used for swatch and crochet hook of same size or 1/2 smaller and at least 30g contrast colour.chunky cardi

Reading Charted Patterns
for Crocheters
If you have ever looked at a crochet pattern then you have noticed the attractive snowflake motifs that accompany many instructions.  These are not just pretty pictures. They are the hieroglyphics that tell all about the pattern. Many folks find a chart easier to decipher then a long winded written pattern, but first you have to know how to decode the lines and squiggles.  We will show you how and you will make the prettiest wee coasters while you’re at it.

hot times – felting in the city

Felt is a perfect summer activity.  Especially wet-felting where you muck about with water and soap and fleece.  When all is said and done you are left feeling very clean, with a well satisfied inner child and a pleasing felt form before you.  A win-win-win situation!

These felt slippers are by Keily Stewart who is teaching a wet felting class at the Knit Cafe this August.

      Felt Slipper Class
Thursday August 18, 6:30-9pm

$30 plus materials
There will be a small materials fee for a felting kit of $2.75. Students will also need 4oz of roving which the Knit Cafe has stocked in an abundance of colours.

For other wearable felt items you might want to take inspiration from Shan Shan from Tokoyo.  Her Etsy shop dadaya is full of imaginative felted goods, expertly made.  Here are a few examples
