Just beginning, or just finished? What are you knitting?

Iwona just stopped by to show me her new hand-knit sweater, fresh off the blocking board! It is spectacular!
You might be surprised to here that even though Iwona and I are both knitting fairly constantly, it is still a rare event for us to make a sweater meant for keeps. A sweater is a pretty big commitment after all.  It takes time it takes lots of yarn, and sometimes it takes trial and error to get the perfect size and shape, or the perfect combo of needles, yarn, and pattern. It is for the love of these challenges that I wish I had time to make more sweaters, that and so I would have more cozy things to wear.

You know what does not take a long time to knit?

A hat!

Have you ever made one before? More experienced knitters know it is one of the fastest projects around.  Knitters who have only made scarves before have a pleasant surprise in store when they make their first hat.
A hat project is also a great way to learn how to knit in circles and use the pesky double pointed needles for the first time.  The Knit Cafe has a workshop that teaches exactly that coming up real soon.  It’s on Oct 2!  Wow!- it’ almost October!

If you are wondering what Iwona’s sweater looks like – I did take some pictures of course.

pomme de pin

The pattern is called Pomme de Pin, and it’s designed by Amy Christoffers.  It is a popular pattern on Ravelry and for good reason.  The pretty lace work and comfy over sized construction make it a lovely combo of comfort and elegance. Iwona made her version with wonderful Pashmina by Madelinetosh yarns. It’s a blend of merino, cashmere, and silk.

I also finished a sweater recently.
Many of you have seen me wearing it, no doubt.  It was a good layer during this coolish summer season. Still looks good though. I made it with sock yarn, so that probably helps keep the wear and tear at bay.  It’s Madelinetosh Sock yarn in a colour called Coquette.

lobelia

The pattern is called Lobelia and it is from Pom Pom Magazine which is an online knit magazine that is published quarterly.  I was attracted to the crop fit in this sweater, the cable ribbing on the cuffs and bottom and especially the unusual lace patterning along the raglan increases.

What’s next I wonder, maybe I’ll knit a hat.
