What to knit with two weeks till Christmas

Make head-toppers! Something for the head generally takes less time to make then something for the neck.

The Knit Café just released this pattern last month! It is called Fay Wray. Quite a glamourous headband made from The Knit Café in house yarn called Small Batch Number One !

Small Batch is  a soft yarn produced entirely in southern Ontario, from farm, to mill to shop. You can only purchase it from us in-shop or from our webshop HERE.

Starry Night Chapeau is one of The Knit Cafe’s most popular hat patterns. It is a classic shape with a pretty twist-stitch pattern, Sizing is available for tiny tots and full grown folks too!
Our version is knit with Riverside Studio’s Single Ply Worsted. This makes the hat super-soft, really pretty, and made in Canada!

Make sure to check out Brooklyn Tweeds new collection of Holiday Knits. It includes this fashionable hat they call Quincy. This hat is knit with chunky Quarry yarn and has a really interesting construction for a really unique hat. You can find the pattern HERE
Quarry is available in The Knit Café on Roncesvalles and also in our Webshop!

Also check out this lovely cabled hat by Brooklyn Tweed called Skiff. This hat can be knit into a tighter fitting beanie or (as shown) a slouchier version. Find the pattern HERE.

This hat is knit with Shelter from Brooklyn Tweed which is available here too!

Making presents is such fun!

Knit Cafe Yarn! What?

Yes, The rumors are true – The Knit Café has it’s own house yarn! It’s called Small Batch Number 1, and like the name suggests it is a limited edition yarn. It was created with the help of a local sheep farm, and a nearby mini mill. This yarn has a small footprint!
Spun with the Ontarian Sheep breed called Norbouillet, this is a soft wool, that resembles in feel to Rambouillet: the French merino

Colours from left to right: Night Swimming, Dream a little dream, Grass hopper, Gold rush, Sailor’s delight, Woolly Mammoth. The colours were created by combining three different colours of fleece resulting in heathered colour-ways.

You can find out more about our Small Batch Number 1 in our webshop. It’s for sale online Whoopee! and in the shop proper too of course.

Along with the arrival of our new Small Batch Number 1 yarn is a new pattern. It’s a stylish headband  knit with ribbing stitches and a cable placed asymmetrically in a flapper-esque style. This pattern is called Fay Wray. You can find it right HERE

Also new and exclusive to The Knit Café is this ↓

You may remember this yarn, it is a special custom colour made for The Knit Café from Riverside Studio called “firefly”. This colour was originally made for The Knit Cafe’s Yarn Club 2016 in a worsted weight but we loved it so much we could not let it go and have asked Kathryn to make it for us again but in a sock weight. Here it is on Riverside Studio’s Super Sock yarn base, a blend of 80% merino and 20% nylon.
This colour knits-up AMAZING! It looks like little copper coloured fireflies in a midnight sky. You can see how it looks knit up in worsted weight if you check out The Knit Cafe’s Starry Night Chapeau. Please note this is a thicker yarn then what we have in stock.

Riverside Studio Super Sock in Firefly is also available in The Knit Cafe’s webshop.

New in the Knit Café on Roncesvalles Ave only is more lovely Riverside Studio Worsted Singles! This is the stuff you should use for your Starry Night Chapeau.

Custom Colour from Riverside Studio

Super Sock from Riverside Studio is here!

Included in this batch is The Knit Cafe’s exclusive colourway called Firefly. This is the colour that we designed with Kathryn from Riverside Studio in Quebec for our yarn club members. We loved it so much!

riverside studio knit cafe custom colour firefly

It seems like a lot of others loved it so much too. We saw so many disappointed faces when we told people it was unavailable. The answer to this torment we decided was to ask Riverside Studio to dye us up a new batch of the custom colour but this time make it sock yarn!

The original batch was a soft  one ply worsted only for Yarn Club 2016 members. We knit it up into our Starry Night Chapeau pattern ↑
This new batch is Super Sock, a fingering weight yarn that would be outstanding knit into light weight garments and of course, into socks. We have a limited supply of the “Firefly” colour-way so come in soon to get yours.

All I can say is – Wow!

Oh My Dear you should get here right now!

riverside studio super bulky

I just opened a great, big box which contained this great, big, beautiful yarn. My sources say that this may be a yarn of a limited edition. Riverside Studio has dyed us these super bulky and super-duper, soft skeins of 100% merino, superwash wool. Wow! Kathryn, at Riverside says she may not be able to dye this Super Bulky wool again so get ’em while you can!

Thanks to Thanksgiving, I have not posted in a while. Apologies,  I have been remiss in my duty to keep you up to date on the comings and goings. One of which was the arrival of Riverside Studio’s Worsted 1ply. It is so soft and dreamy that a lot of it has left the shop already, but remarkably we still have…

this!

and this!

and this too!

Also today we received some NORO!
Noro yarns make us so happy with their happy, happy, rainbow ways.  To say that it is a self-striping yarn really undersells the wonderful effect of Noro’s blending and twisting colour patterns.

noro

Along with Kureopatora, which is the worsted weight, merino blend we had last year, we received a brand new offering from Noro called Kureyon Air.
In short it is- BIG FAT NORO!

noro kureyon air

It weighs in as a bulky weight, calling for a 9mm needle and still has all the gorgeous striping colours Noro is known for. It is softer then it’s smaller cousin Kureyon and I encourage you to come in and give it a squeeze.

If you are inspired by the pretty Noro but don’t know what to make, we have many suggestions including this classic striped scarf projects which uses two balls (two distinct colour-ways) striped. So basically it is striping yarn that is knit in stripes.

If you are new to the land of knit, and need some help in making such a scarf- we have a class for that.

Sock yarn from Riverside Studio

Some of you have told me that your favourite Indie Hand Dyer is Riverside Studio from Wakefield Quebec.  I think this is a solid choice. There are so many unique colour-ways coming from this Canadian artisan. Riverside’s Super Sock yarn-base is no slouch either with a “super” tight spin. This superwash merino with 20% nylon has enough yardage in one skein for a pair of socks, and at a reasonable price too – $24.
