Knit little – dream big!

We have a brand new,  learn to knit class starting soon!

knit 101 baby

Learn all your knit-basics whilst stitching up some pretty adorable tiny knits. We designed this class around the notion that small things are faster to knit and finishing a project quickly breeds satisfaction.  Knits for small people are also innately cute and so motivating to knit. If you have a wee-one in your life to knit for then come join us in this class.

This class is for:

  • Those who have never knit before

  • Those who have tried but need some hands on care

  • Lapsed knitters who need their skills refreshed. Perhaps you have taken our Knit 101 in the past but forgotten a thing or two. The same techniques will be taught in this class but with different projects and patterns to try.

knit 101 baby

We start the class with a washcloth project to introduce the “knit stitch”

knit 101 baby

Then, we move on to baby sized leg warmers. These are great for keeping baby warm but still having access to quick changes when the need arises. The leg warmers project introduces the “purl stitch”.
Hats are next! Pattern reading and knitting in circles are both very important basic skills that allow new knitters to continue on and knit more and more and more!

baby blanket

Fast knitters may even start a baby blanket in class! If not you can always take our Baby Blanket Workshop in June.

Rug Hooking Workshop

Look at these cute fellows.  They’re by artist Ann Willey and they are rug hooked.

ann willey

It just goes to show, you can do so much with this craft.

I think many of us hold a dear place in our hearts for craft-work that was developed from thrift.  Rug hooking like quilting, seems to have been invented to make the most out of little resources.  The results of necessity to save and scrounge is anything but utilitarian.  The results are full of colour and joy, invested with visual and tactile memory. The results are rugs and bedspreads and so much more.

Join Maurie Todd here at the Knit Cafe for our Introduction to Rug Hooking Class. Bring your scrap yarn and some memories worth preserving.
Monday May 26th, 6:30-9pm,

rug hooking ♥

Do you love rug hooking like I love rug hooking?
You don’t have to be an artistic genius to make a really beautiful rug hooking.  Hyper realistic designs rarely make an appearance, and rug hooking is so much the better for it.  Think Maude Lewis, not so much Alex Colville!
altoon sultanRug hooked project by Altoon Sultan↑

Also, take inspiration from Matisse, Rothko, or Marimekko, and go for big, bold and abstract and you won’t go wrong. Stripes, polka dots, and geometric shapes all make wonderful templates for a rug hooked design.  The personality comes with the colour choice and the texture and don’t forget the “je ne sais quoi”.

If you want to get pictorial, you don’t have to get fancy.  This house is made up of simple shapes and is still a really appealing design. This rug hooking  pic is by  Becky Johnson taken at the Textile Museum.
